About HIPAA

HIPAA is an acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

The purpose of this act is to protect electronic patient health information in storage or in transit. There have been several amendments and related legislation, including the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, which provides some specific guidelines regarding compliance.

HIPPA and other laws apply to Covered Entities and include health care providers, health plans, or health care clearinghouses that create, maintain, or transmit patient health information in the ordinary course of their activities.
